2022 Updates and News

Hi everyone.  I have a few new things to add and some sad news, at least for me.  First, here are some movies I have information about that I would like to share.

HOT RODS TO HELL (1967) is a.k.a. 52 MILES TO TERROR, not 52 MILES TO MIDNIGHT as your book states.

PICTURE MOMMY DEAD (1966) is 83 m.

STEAMBOY (2004, Japanese) - The English dubbed version runs 105 m.

The sad news I have to report is that this may be my last post on this blog.  I recently linked this blog to Leonard Maltins Facebook page twice, and both times that link was deleted.  I don’t know if Leonard himself deleted it, his daughter Jessie, or some faceless admin who manages his page.  In any case, I’m not happy.  I then posted a lengthy comment on his Twitter telling him what happened and that I am now unfollowing him on social media.  I did unfollow both his Facebook page and Twitter that day.  Now maybe you are thinking I am overreacting, and I should follow him again as Leonard may not have even known about any of the comments or links that I made.  I guess I feel that after all these years of buying different versions of his Movie Guide and Classic Movie Guide that one of my favorite critics has now disappointed me.  But as I said earlier, it may have been some faceless person who feels that I should not correct Leonard when it comes to anything he says.  I have a lot of respect for Leonard, and I don’t mind when he gives an opinion that I don’t share.  In many cases, I completely understand where he is coming from.  Some of my favorite movies are horror, sci-fi and various types of B movies that Leonard doesn’t like - or even bother to review in his books.  Yeah, many of them have silly plots and bad acting, but I can usually overlook these things if the movie is reasonably entertaining.  And if Leonard likes a movie that I can't stand, well, he’s entitled to.

I guess I’ll see what the future brings before I call it a day.  In any case, thank you for reading my blog!

Update For February 2021

Hi everyone!  I have a couple small updates and some new movie info to share with you.

UNSANE (1982, Italian) is 90 m.

THE VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA (1960, Italian) was directed by Renato Polselli, not “Poiselli”, and it’s 84 minutes.  The title on every print I’ve seen is L’AMANTE DEL VAMPIRO, even the English dubbed version.  This movie is in the Classic Movie Guide.

THE WATER BABIES (1978, British - Polish) - Your book lists 92 m., but the British version is 94 m.

That’s it for this time.  Thank you for reading my blog.

Movie Guide Corrections List

Hi everyone!  If you're a fan of movies, and have purchased a copy of Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide - The Modern Era or Classic Movie Guide, then this blog may interest you.  I’m not sure how many times I'll be writing in it.  I wanted to post this initial list to give you something to read and refer to.  This is a long list of corrections and additions to Leonard’s book that I think will interest most movie fans.  I am very sad that Leonard will never publish an update of his book and that many of the mistakes in his final edition will never be corrected.  This may come a few years too late, but better late than never.

Over the years Leonard has removed several movies from his Movie Guide to make room for current titles.  Older films have sometimes found a new home in his Classic Movie Guide, but there are several films from all genres that havent been put back in any edition.  Many B movies were given an approximate running time of 90 minutes, although quite often they were several minutes shorter or longer.  TV movies designed to fit a two hour time slot with commercial breaks were approximated at 100 minutes, although nearly all of them were actually shorter.  If you are unsure of a films actual running time, please consult with a fan who has a copy of it.  Ill do my best to answer any questions you may have, but please understand that there are many, many movies that I havent seen.

Edit: I’m not associated with Mr. Leonard Maltin or his family in any way.  I’m simply a movie fan who wants to share his knowledge of movies with the whole world.

THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE EIGHTH DIMENSION (1984) theatrical version is 102 m. and the BUCKAROO BANZAI director’s cut is 104 m.

THE ADVENTURES OF THE WILDERNESS FAMILY (1975) simply appears as THE WILDERNESS FAMILY onscreen.  The DVD is 99 m.

AFTER MIDNIGHT (1989) - I believe Ramy Zada (not Zade) is the correct spelling of this actor’s name.  This movie is 93 m.

THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) clocks in about 114 minutes on VHS and 118 m. on DVD.  I have no idea why.

AMITYVILLE 3-D (1983) is 93m., not 105 m. as your book states.  Your review mentions the next sequel as AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES, but this TV movie was originally broadcast without the number in the title.  There are more than two direct-to-video sequels.  (I think there are five video sequels, plus a documentary on Daniel Lutz titled MY AMITYVILLE HORROR.)

ANDY WARHOL’S DRACULA a.k.a. BLOOD FOR DRACULA (1974, Italian-U.S.) is 103 m. in director’s cut form.

ATOR, THE FIGHTING EAGLE (1982, Italian) and THE BLADE MASTER (1983, Italian) - How about adding Aristide Massaccesi, or at least Joe D’Amato, to the director’s name in parenthesis?  By the way, both movies are 92 m. each, although these may be edited U.S. prints I saw.

BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA (2007) is 96 m.

BUGVILLE a.k.a. HOPPITY GOES TO TOWN (1941) has been deleted from the Modern Era book, yet there is a mention of this in the 2015 edition.

THE CENTER OF THE WORLD (2001) - You say, “Unrated version runs 88 m.”, yet there isn’t a rating mentioned for the shorter print.

C.H.U.D. (1984) is 87 m. if you are watching the theatrical version and 97 m. if you are watching the director’s cut on DVD.

CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (1972) - I have heard there is an alternate director’s cut on Blu-ray for those lucky enough to have such machines.  I haven’t seen this myself.

CREATURE (1985) is 93 m. in its U.S. cut.  The longer version, THE TITAN FIND, is 100 m.

CREEPERS (1984, Italian) is the U.S. title for Dario Argento’s PHENOMENA.  I understand why you use it for your book, but you state that the running time is 110 m.  The edited U.S. version, CREEPERS, is actually 83 m. and the U.S. DVD version, PHENOMENA, is 110 m.  I really think you should be clear on what title and running time go together.  This problem crops up again for another Argento title.  And for the record, the “Integral Version” of PHENOMENA is 111 m. and the Italian version is 116 m.

THE CURSE (1987) is 87 m. on VHS, but the DVD is 91 m.

A DATE WITH DEATH (1966, British) - Your book says “SEE: McGuire Go Home!”, but you deleted this film from your book several years back!

DEATH RAGE (1976, Italian) runs 85 m. on public domain prints.

DEEP RED (1975, Italian), the English title for Dario Argento’s PROFONDO ROSSO, is available in a R rated 101 m. print and an uncut 127 m. print.  Various prints with running times in between those two are also floating around.  Your book has always stated 98 m. for the R cut, which is 3 m. shorter than any print I’ve seen myself.

DEMONS 2 (1986, Italian) comes in 89 m. R rated and 91 m. unrated prints.

DRACULA A.D. 1972 (1972, British) is 96 m.

GHOST BUSTERS (1984) is 105 m.

GREEN LANTERN (2011) - I believe there is a longer director’s cut available on Blu-ray, but I don’t have a Blu-ray player to watch it.

THE GRIM REAPER (1980, Italian) is a.k.a. ANTROPOPHAGUS and is 91 m. in its uncut form.  There are several other alternate titles in various countries.

HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982) is 98 m.

HALLOWEEN 6 - THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1995) - The Producer’s Cut is 96 m.

THE HAUNTED PALACE (1963) is 87 m.  It’s based on “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward” (“Strange” is not part of the title) by H.P. Lovecraft.

THE HAUNTING FEAR (1991) co-stars Delia Sheppard, not “Della”.

HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II (1988, British) - First off, I have been upset by your comment “(it’s not a sequel to HELLBOUND)” ever since you included it in your book.  I’d think anyone who is looking at the years of release would see that a 1988 film could not possibly be a sequel to a 1993 film.  Anyway, there are three versions of this movie: R rated, 93 m.; unrated VHS, 97 m.; and unrated DVD, 99 m.

HELLRAISER III (1992) also (apparently) comes in three versions.  The R rated cut is 93 m. and the unrated VHS is 97 m.  When Paramount released this on DVD they reportedly released a 94 m. cut, which may be the Canadian theatrical version.  Because this wasn’t the official U.S. theatrical cut the DVD was recalled.  Why the 97 m. cut wasn’t released is unknown.

HOOT (2006) is 91 m.

THE HORROR SHOW (1989) is 94 m.

HOUSE (1986) is 92 m.

HOUSE IV (1992) is 94 m.

THE HUMAN GORILLA a.k.a. BEHIND LOCKED DOORS (1948) has been deleted from the Modern Era book yet there is a mention of this in the 2015 edition.

IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD (1963) is mentioned to be 154 m., 159 m., 175 m. and 197 m. in various editions of your book.

JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY (1993) comes in 88m. R rated and 91 m. unrated versions.

JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS (2001) - I came across a PG edit on DVD in a store, but did not buy it.  Why classic children’s comics have to have PG-13 movie adaptations, I don’t know…

KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (1988) is 86 m.

LASERBLAST (1978) is 82 m.

LURKING FEAR (1994) - Ashley Lauren went by Ashley Laurence when she appeared in the HELLRAISER films.

MONSTER ISLAND (1981, U.S.-Spanish) is a.k.a. MYSTERY ON MONSTER ISLAND and it’s 105 m.  This is available on DVD.

NIGHTBREED (1990, U.S.-Canadian) - I hear there’s a longer cut of this movie on Blu-ray.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET: THE DREAM CHILD (1989) is about 90 m. in either R rated or unrated form (the difference being 31 seconds).

PATRICK (1978, Australian) - I clocked the U.S. dubbed edit (from a VHS tape) at 97 m.  The uncut version is 112 m. with the original Australian accents intact.

PHANTOM (2013) is listed before THE PHANTOM (1996).  Please explain.

PUPPETMASTER (1989) and PUPPET MASTER II (1990) are 89 m. each and PUPPET MASTER III: TOULON’S REVENGE (1991) is 82 m.

RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (1985) - It has come to my attention that there is a RAMBO animated series which followed this film.

RAMPAGE (1992) - You mention that this was filmed in 1987, but I understand the European version was released then.  It apparently has an alternate ending and / or scenes.  The 1992 edit is 92 m.

RESIDENT EVIL (2002) - You say German-U.S.-French and I got (from the DVD box) German-British.  And 101 m. as a running time.

RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE (2004) - You say German-French-British and I got (again from the DVD box) Canadian-British.  Go figure.

RETURN TO THE BLUE LAGOON (1991) is 102 m.

THE SEA GYPSIES (1978) is a.k.a. SHIPWRECK!

THE SEA SERPENT (1986, Spanish) is apparently the work of director Amando de Ossorio using the alias “Gregory Greens” (as director) and “Gordon D. Osmond” (as writer).

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT (1984) was released on VHS in a 85 m. print too.  As a matter of fact, I’m unaware of any U.S. home video release of the R rated cut.

SKEETER (1994) is rated R.

STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES (2002) – It should read ‘a homage’, not ‘an’.

SWAMP THING (1982) was released on DVD in a slightly longer 92 m. cut with extra female nudity, although still rated PG.  The box also states 1981 as the year of release.

TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA (1970, British) is rated R on DVD.

TERROR AT THE OPERA (1987, Italian) - You mention that OPERA is the original title, but this title can’t be found in the O section (after movies starting with “Open”, for example).

TERROR IN THE CRYPT (1964, Spanish-Italian) is a.k.a. CRYPT OF THE VAMPIRE and CRYPT OF HORROR.

THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984) comes in 81 m. R rated and 82 m. unrated versions.  The Japanese print is supposed to be 92 m., but I have not seen it.

TRAUMA (1993, U.S.-Italian) comes in 105 m. R rated and 106 m. unrated versions.  There isn’t a version that’s 86 m. as your book states.

TROLL (1986) is about 83 m.  TROLL II is an in-name-only sequel.

UNSANE (1982, Italian) is the U.S. title for Dario Argento’s TENEBRAE.  Again you state the film is 101 m. without acknowledging that is the uncut version’s running time.  If you say the edit is 91 m. I’ll have to take your word for it since I haven’t personally seen it.

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970, British) is 91 m.

VIRUS (1980, Japanese) - The edited print carried by public domain distributors is 103 m.

THE WASP WOMAN (1960) was released on VHS in a 73 m. cut from Rhino Home Video.  I also read about a 77 m. cut released on tape, but haven’t seen it.  Honestly, this movie is boring.  I didn’t see the Wasp Woman until after the 52 minute mark!  I know you moved this from your Movie Guide and placed it into your Classic Movie Guide.

THE WATER BABIES (1978, British-Polish) - Your book lists 92 m., which is probably the correct time.  I haven’t seen the uncut version in several years.  I did rent a version on VHS a long time ago that was 85 m. and obviously missing at least one scene.  (Dialogue referenced a second meeting between two characters, although the first meeting wasn’t on the VHS print.)  There was a DVD released in 2002, but I didn’t buy it because the listed time was 76 m.!  I actually like this film and watched it repeatedly on cable TV when I was a kid.

WHERE TIME BEGAN (1978, Spanish) - How about adding Juan to the director’s name?

And that’s all (for now) folks!
